Performance Comparison Between High Frequency Cold Welding and TIG Welding of Stainless Sheet Steel

Abstract: The performance of high frequency cold welding joint and TIG welding joint of 0.5mm thick 304 stainless steel sheet was compared. The results show that compared with TIG welding process, under the action of high frequency pulse current, low heat input makes the width of cold welding seam reduce by 50%, the maximum welding deformation reduce by 23.8%, and the oxidation degree around the joint is even lower. Continuous and alternate incomplete penetration and crater defects make the weld the weakest zone of the cold welded joint, and the tensile strength and elongation are about 5.9% and 10.1% lower than those of TIG welding joint, respectively. However, the tensile strength stability of the joint can reach 3.6 times of that of TIG welding joint. The low heat input also makes the columnar crystal in the WZ and austenite coarseness in the HAZ of cold welded joint lower than that of TIG welding. The high frequency cold welding technology can meet the actual demand of thin plate welding.
