Abstract:
TiAlN coatings are widely used as a wear protection layer on the surface of tools and components due to their high hardness and good thermal stability. However, TiAlN coatings can no longer meet the demand with the application of difficult-to-machine materials such as high temperature alloys with cutting temperatures over 1000 ℃. Elemental doping could improve the oxidation resistance and wear resistance of TiAlN coatings as well as increase their hardness. The preparation techniques of TiAlN-based coatings were introduced. The principles as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each preparation technique were described. The research status of common Si and Cr element-doped TiAlN four-element and five-element coatings were reviewed. The mechanism of elemental doping on the hardening, oxidation resistance and wear resistance of TiAlN-based coatings was described from multiple perspectives. The shortcomings of current doped TiAlN coatings were also summarized. Finally, an outlook on TiAlN-based coatings was given. This work was intended to provide an effective guide to the further application of TiAlN-based coatings.
