Abstract:
Grinding burn is one of the common forms of surface damage in the field of metal parts manufacturing, and property changes in the burned zone reduce the operational stability and service safety of the workpiece. Traditional detection approaches such as acid etching method and metallographic method were found to suffer from specimen destruction, difficult quantitative evaluation and environmental pollution and other problems. These methods are mostly used in laboratory sampling test and can not be applied to industrial field large-volume testing. Electromagnetic non-destructive testing has become a frontier method for industrialized detection of grinding burn by virtue of its non-destructive, accurate and efficient advantages. The formation mechanism of grinding burn was systematically summarized, and the applications of electromagnetic detection technologies for grinding burn assessment were comprehensively reviewed. The fundamental principles of typical electromagnetic non-destructive testing technologies such as eddy current method, magnetic barkhausen method and magnetic leakage method were introduced. The applicable ranges and limiting factors of various electromagnetic detection methods were thoroughly discussed. The existing challenges of electromagnetic detection technologies for grinding burn were identified, and their future development trends were prospected.
