Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Resistance Evaluation of Arc Directed Energy Deposition Repaired 5083 Aluminum Alloy

    • To address the damage problems and repair demands in 5083 aluminum alloy application, arc directed energy deposition (ADED) technology was used to repair simulated surface damage and through-thickness damage. The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the surface and through-thickness damage repaired joints were evaluated through tensile test and salt spray corrosion test. Metallographic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to observe and analyze morphological and elemental differences between the base material and the damage repaired joints. The results show that the tensile strength of the surface, through-thickness damage repaired joints achieves 91.2%,89.6% of the base material's tensile strength, and the repaired microstructure demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance in acidic salt spray environments. The main factor affecting the performance of arc directed deposition repaired joints is the porosity in the microstructure of the repaired area. An increase of secondary phases and grain size also reduces the performance of the repaired joints.
